A Smile and a Tear

Esme put her socks in a box. Mum sat beside her. They were moving to a new home. “A new bedroom,” said Mum. Esme smiled. “My new room!” She put in one more sock.
Rain tapped on the kitchen window. Esme ran to it. Water splashed on the red roof outside. Her smile went. Her lip shook. “My roof,” she said. Tears ran down her face.
