A Squeeze, Then a Release
Felix was six and liked getting dressed before breakfast. Today he wore his fox hoodie, with its soft ears and long cloth tail. At home, he called himself Felix the fox kit. He could curl up in his bedroom chair and tuck the tail around his knees. It was a comfortable way to be small.
This morning, Mum was taking him for a checkup and a vaccination. She had told him that the injection might give him a small pinch and leave his arm sore. Felix wished they could go tomorrow. He put his shoes on anyway, slowly, beside his bed.
At the clinic, the nurse showed him a chair beside Mum. There was a weighing scale, a box of tissues, and a machine with a dark screen. Felix watched the nurse pick up a wide cuff. Its tube hung down like a question he could not answer.
"This checks your blood pressure," she said, wrapping it around his bare upper arm. Felix pulled his cloth tail across his lap and tucked it close around himself. The cuff was not squeezing yet, but he could already imagine it getting tighter and tighter without ever letting go.
Sleep tight.
