The Second Try

Ages 4–85 min read

Kai was learning to ride a bike, and Kai was DONE.

The bike, in his opinion, was unfair. The bike wobbled when he didn't want it to wobble. The bike fell sideways when he wasn't looking. His knees had a small graze from yesterday and another small graze from today, and his patience was completely used up.

"I CAN'T DO IT," Kai shouted. He pushed the bike onto the grass and sat down beside it, arms folded.

His grandpa came out and sat down too. Grandpa was old, and his knees creaked a little when he sat, and he didn't say anything for a long time. He just looked at the trees with Kai.

Finally Grandpa said, "You know what's interesting about the second try?"

"What?" said Kai. He was still cross.

Sleep tight.
